The Sumatran Tigress

18" x 24" Oil Painting on Wood

The Sumatran tiger is the smallest of the surviving tiger subspecies left in the world, according to World Wildlife Fund. They are part of the Sunda tiger species but since the tigers that used to roam Java and Bali are now extinct, the approximately 400 tigers that remain are found only in Sumatra. A demand for tiger parts and products continues to drive poaching efforts despite their Critically Endangered status (International Union for Conservation of Nature, IUCN).

Speaking of Sumatra -- did you know this is the only place where tigers, elephants, orangutans, and rhinoceros thrive together in the wild? This is an indication of the land’s biodiversity and forest health -- but, for how much longer?
