Neither

18" x 24" Acrylic Painting on Wood Panel

Neitheris a piece offering a bold statement depicting the most striking contrast and pattern found on a living animal on Earth: the Zebra. When you delve into the world of art-making however, you learn to notice details and underlying elements of both -- 1) the living subjects and 2) the paint/pigment itself you are working with. There is no true or absolute "black" or "white" in nature, as far as we know. Instead, there are many colors that make up "black" and a variety of hues that actually tint what we otherwise perceive as "white." Since high-contrast plays a part in what we perceive, we "see" the colors of a zebra as "black" and "white." For this piece, I created the "black" and "white" with NEITHER black or white paint. I invite you to see the piece in person and let me know what colors you think I used instead of "black" and instead of pure "white." While there, you may also take note of the fur texture I created using a dental pick for I used NEITHER a paintbrush nor the traditional palette knife to achieve the sculpted texture for this piece.
