The American Alligator
18" x 24" Acrylic Painting on Canvas
I don’t mean to alarm you but... just kidding. This here missy and her kind is found in the Southeastern areas of the United States and you would be delighted to get a close-up (if you dare) study of their reptilian nature at Alligator Adventures in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This is not an advertisement — I truly had an amazing time visiting their enclosures and learning about them this summer of 2021. However, that trip took place after I painted this one. I will just have to paint another based on these new photographs I took myself! The photograph I referenced for this painting was taken of a rather large toothy tough guy at Middleton Place by my husband’s stepdad Ted. It’s my mother-in-law’s and Ted’s favorite place to visit in South Carolina. Did I say tough guy? Did you know alligator gender is expressed based on the temperature around the eggs during incubation? Well, if you didn’t know, now you know. :)
